The Hungarian capital – Budapest – is really a tale of two cities. Buda is the fancy schmancy side of the Danube river with the castle and the old town. Pest is the rest of the city, where all the action happens. It’s also a tale of two cities in terms of the nightlife, versus […]

Ever considered travelling through Ukraine?
We did! A lot of people were surprised when we told them Ukraine was on our list of countries to visit. It isn’t really on the regular tourist route around Europe, but perhaps that is what intrigued us even more. Visiting Ukraine also changed a lot of our preconceptions of this fascinating country.
Visa
Before we left, we read up that the visa rules had changed for Australians, and that you could now get a visa on arrival IF you entered the country through Borispol Airport in Kiev, or the sea port in Odessa. If you’re Australian and want to know more, click here: Embassy of Ukraine in Australia
This actually changed our itinerary a fair bit as it was a much cheaper option to do the visa this way, so we decided to fly into Kiev’s Borispol Airport. We knew that we still had to be prepared for the application…

Moldova
Is it worth going to Moldova?
Well let me ask you a few of questions.
- Do you enjoy drinking high quality wine and not paying through the nose?
- Do you like getting off the beaten track?
- Do you revel finding cheap food and accomodation?
If you answered yes to any of these questions then you my friend sound like you’d be a perfect candidate for a trip to Moldova.
We didn’t really know what to expect when we arrived in Moldova, because let’s admit it, Moldova doesn’t really rank highly on many foreigner’s ‘dream destinations’ lists. We spent half a week in Moldova and this wasn’t enough time to see everything we wanted to see, so it is a country that we’d like to go back to one day.
The Visa
Australian’s don’t need a visa to travel to Moldova if you’re staying less than 90 days (if you stay more than 90 days you either found a…

Romania
Romania is famous for Dracula but what else?
Yes, ‘Dracula’s Castle’ is located in Transylvania which is within Romania, and yes, it may be the most visited attraction in Romania but there’s so much more to see and do in Romania. Besides, ‘Dracula’s Castle’ (Bran Castle) isn’t much chop, to be honest (read on to find out why.)
The Visa
No dramas if you’re Australian getting into Romania. We had our passports stamped at the border and the guard asked us a couple of questions to see if we had enough money for our stay in Romania (just to make sure we weren’t going to work illegally.) As always check the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website for the latest visa info.
General Advice and how much to budget
- BEWARE! Hopping on the train at Bucharest station before the train gets going you’ll be hassled by people asking for money. They often do this in a very cunning…

Bulgaria
Bloody Beautiful Bulgaria
Bulgaria is one of our favourite countries we’ve ever been to. Now that I’ve started with that big statement, I’ll attempt to explain why we love Bulgaria – but in a nutshell, cost of living is cheap, the country side is bloody beautiful and it feels like the whole world hasn’t cottoned on to the fact that this place is amazing. As a result, it’s not over run with tourists.
The Visa
No applying for a visa in advance is required if you’re Australian and just going there for a holiday. Bulgaria is a part of the EU but isn’t part of the Schengen Area (although they are trying to become apart of the Schengen Area). As per usual you should check out the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website for more details.
General advice
- Try not to nod your head for yes and shake your head for no, it…
